Click on the year in the second column of the table below for games viewer, PGN, crosstables, results, photos, etc.

The number in the extreme left-hand column of the table is the official number in the sequence of British Chess Federation (BCF) Congresses and British Championships. N.b. Not all the early BCF congresses featured a tournament for the British Championship. In 1919, 1922, 1927, 1930 and 1939 there were international or non-championship tournaments instead, and the British Championship title was not at stake. In 2020, the British Championships were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

1 David Rabinovich played off for the 1934 title with Frank Parr. David Rabinovich later changed his name to David Raeburn.
2 Alan Richard Duff (Leyton County High School) won the 1937 Boys' (U18) Championship after beating DK Green (Reading School) in a tie-break.
3 The 1953-55 winners of the British Under 21 title are correct as shown above. They are shown incorrectly as 1955-1957 winners in some volumes of the BCF/ECF Yearbook (2001 onwards - still shown wrongly in the 2009 edition of the ECF Official Chess Yearbook).
4 In 1979 championship titles were decided on Sum of Opponents' Scores (Buchholz) where players tied on the same score, though money prizes were shared equally.

1 Girls' Championships prior to 1933 are not recorded in the official BCF/ECF champions list though they are sometimes recorded as World Girls' Championships. In 1932 at least one of the participants (Mrs Hilda Yvonne Pattison, née Cole, 1911-1994) was older than 18 so the under 21 column is more appropriate.
2 The 1946 and 1947 under-15 girls champions' names do not appear in yearbooks and it appears they were overlooked when a list of junior champions was first compiled for inclusion in the BCF Yearbook (1963/64 edition). At least one contemporary report (see here) shows that there were separate under-18 and under-15 championships played in 1946 and 1947.
3 In 1979 all British championship titles were decided on Sum of Opponents' Scores (Buchholz) where players tied on the same score, though money prizes were shared equally.

File Updated

Date Notes
Early 2000s? I can't remember exactly when I started this page, to be honest. And I should have added an update list long before now, but hey...
14 June 2021 Joint 1973 British Girls' U18 champion was Elaine M Sadler, not Elizabeth M Sadler as given here previously. My thanks to Paul Georghiou for pointing this out. Paul provides some references to her by her correct name in SCCU bulletins. Try a search such as site:https://sccu-chess.com elaine sadler
10 October 2021 Added 2021 British champions as found at this page on the ECF site.
22 August 2022 2022 champions added. The published list here.
17 April 2023 Added the names of the 1946 and 1947 British girls' under-15 champions, as reported in British Chess Magazine, May 1947, page 144.
30 July 2023 2023 champions being added when known.
9 August 2023 Completed addition of 2023 champions. Updated list of senior champions who have won more than one title and moved it next to the list of senior champions.
20 November 2023 I am grateful to Richard Bates for pointing out that the 2015 Senior Champions were all brigaded in the Over 65 category when two of them should have been in the Over 50 column. I had sourced these details from the ECF resources page. Now amended here. A further correction is that Gillian Moore was Women's Over 65 champion that year as well as in 2016. I have sourced these amendments from ChessMoves for Sept/Oct 2015.
