REPORT ON THE 65th ANNUAL CONGRESS [BCF Yearbook 1978/9, page 55]

Held at the Craigie College of Education, Ayr and sponsored by Grieveson Grant and Co. 7th—19th August, 1978

The Congress was opened on Monday 7th August by the Provost of Kyle & Carrick District Provost A. D. Paton C. A. Mr. W. A. Cordon, the President of the B.C.F., responded for the Federation.

The Congress this year was held in Scotland for the first time for 52 years. In view of the welcome we received it is to be hoped that we do not have to wait this long before we cross the border again.

This year we were sponsored by Grieveson Grant & Co., a leading firm of London Stockbrokers. Their generosity meant that the first prize in the British Championship, including the Sims prize, was over £1,100 while the eighth prize was £200.

The playing conditions were good with two Halls in use and very adequate ancillary rooms for refreshments, analysis and bookstall.

The number of entries was 385 for the first week and 373 for the second week and after allowing for those playing in two one-week events the grand total was 426. This figure was most gratifying after many people had forecast that we would not reach 250.

The British Championship, which had a record number of 44, was extremely hard fought, with hardly any short draws. H. J. Plaskett set the pace by winning his first four games. However J. S. Speelman, who at no stage was lower than second, went through the tournament without losing and eventually finished first with 8½ points. If he repeats this form this should be the first of many wins. Second equal were Plaskett and A. J. Mestel. Fourth equal were P. E. Littlewood and S. Webb and sixth equal were R. Bellin, P. H. Clarke, J. Cooper and J. E. Littlewood. The B.C.Q.C. prizes were won by P. H. Clarke and G. D. Lee.

The Ladies Championship, as last year, finished in a tie. The play-off will be between S. L. Caldwell and S. A. Jackson who finished well clear of the rest of the field.

The under-21 Championship resulted in a four-way tie between T. M. Clarke, J. Hall, A. J. Muir and D. Shuttleworth. They now face a play-off for a place in next year's British Championship.

The under-18 Championship was won by S. Quigley who thereby qualifies for next year's British Championship.

The under-16 Championship was won by T. L. Milligan. Particuarly noteworthy was the performance of Clare Whitehead who finished third equal but would have been first equal if she had won her last round game.

The under-14 Championship was shared by M. Bennett and P. K. Wells.

The under-11 Championship was won by N. L. Carr.

The Girls under-18 was won by last years Girls under-14 Champion, Miss C. Groves.

The Girls under-14 Championship was won by Miss G. D. James.

In the major open tournament S. R. Gillam had a point lead entering the last round but a loss by him enabled J. Steedman to catch him on the post. Both players had 8½ points and on the sum of opponents scores, Steedman qualifies for next year's British Championship.

The first Class Tournament was won by P. W. Bourne. The over-60 Tournament was won by J. B. Hawson with Dr. J. M. Aitken half a point behind in second place.

The five-day events as usual provided keen opposition. The winners were:- First week morning: D. A. Kilgour; first week afternoon: D. Duncan; Second week morning "A"; D. A. Kilgour and M. E. Whetton; Second week morning "B": R. L. Baker; Second week afternoon: D. G. Byrne, M. O'Hara and D. J. A. Sheen.

Once again I have to thank the control team and the B. C. F. Secretary who gave unstintingly of their time and support. Mrs. Kluth headed a team of ladies who gave valuable help on the result desk.

A small prize-giving ceremony was held at the end of the first week when prizes were presented by Councillor Douglas.

The closing ceremony was held on Saturday 19th August The prizes were presented by the Lady Provost, Mrs. A. Paton. Mr. T. E. Borland, President of the Ayr Chess Club, brought the congress to a close.
