Bulletin Report by Stewart Reuben

It was a deliberate policy on my part this year to concentrate invitations on British players. Deep in a recession as we are, it seems only logical to direct our resources toward our own players. Last year the approximate cost of the air-fare Moscow-London return was about £25 in roubles. Now it is about ten times that. Thus we had a diminished number of players from the 15 Republics. In all it is not surprising that there were 20 fewer entries than last year, although we had expected the numbers to be swelled by male players seeking the new 2005 ratings.

The Catford Masters that followed also didn’t seem to attract a huge throng of unrated players. One must assume that the lust for international ratings among the players rated 160+ has not yet taken off.

There was an excellent response to our photocalls from the press. About a dozen photographers from the nationals turned up at the event, but practically nothing was actually published. This was probably due to the competition from the World Draughts Championship taking place at our old hunting ground, the Park Lane Hotel. Also, the players obstinately refused to lose to 5-year-olds or dogs, so that the main stories were of strong players justifying their reputation. That's no way to get into a British newspaper! Additionally the Fischer-Spassky match attracted a great deal of attention.

Jon Speelman continued the mighty tradition that nobody has ever won the Lloyds Bank Masters twice in its 16-year history. He has had a very bad year so that it is extremely heartening to see him sink his teeth into an event, lead from the start and never let go. Jon's best results have generally been in strong closed tournaments, rather than the hurly-burly of open Swisses. Gennadi Timoshchenko virtually matched him point for point throughout most of the tournament and should be pleased to have shown he can compete with the best. His has been a chequered career. He gave up chess for a scientific career but found that, although science kept starvation from the mouth it only barely kept the wolf from the door in Soviet Russia. Later he spent a long time as one of Kasparov’s seconds rathering than furthering his own career.

Matthew Sadler confidently and quietly went about acquiring another grandmaster result in a most professional manner. We expect him to notch up another result and the title by the end of the year. James Howell secured his first GM norm. With so many British starters, it isn't surprising the lion's share of outstanding performance went our way. Andrew Hon completely revised the general view of his standard of play when he started out with wins over grandmasters in rounds two and three and went on to comfortably achieve an IM result. Graeme Buckley and James Poulton were a bit down in the dumps after they muffed their IM norms in the last round. They cheered up when I pointed [out] the new FIDE regulation where their title norms after the first 9 rounds count, even though they fell back in the last game. This means the Hastings Challengers will provide the most versatile tournament of all time for the achievement of title results, since it will be of 11 rounds.

This was the first time a number of tinies had played in this competition. Luke McShane finished with a creditable 4/10 but perhaps demonstrated that a more mature approach is needed to succeed against adults at a slow time limit. Adam Hunt and Nicholas Pert are, at 11, the youngest British players ever to achieve FIDE ratings. However, it is easier now than for Short or Adams as only a 2005+ result is necessary as against 2205 hitherto.

Let us hope that next year we will have to compete for space in the newspapers with publicity for the Short-Kasparov match.
