There was a 12th player, C B Smith of Edinburgh, but he dropped out after four rounds and his results were excluded. From the Birmingham Daily Post, 10 August 1965: "A polio victim, Charles Smith, 26, of Edinburgh, played in the Second Class tournament while lying on a stretcher. Mr. Smith, playing under rules for blind players, made his moves on an electronic set. They were then translated on to the board by his wife. After one and a half hour’s play, Smith lost to a retired tax inspector, A Terrett (Norwich)." This is a curious anticipation of the well-known occasion when Tony Miles, suffering from a bad back, played his games on a stretcher/gurney at Tilburg 1985.
