All-Play-All Pairings for old British Chess Championships

Updated: Monday 9 October, 2023 8:49 AM

John Saunders writes: Whilst working on BritBase, I came across the details of how the British Chess Federation (BCF) used to pair its 12-player all-play-all events, from 1904 up to and including the 1947 BCF Congress. (The 1948 BCF Congress used an amended set of pairings as set out in Table 2 and the Championship switched to a Swiss system tournament in 1949.) I thought it as well to document these pairings rules, as I have the knack of instantly forgetting things when I don't do so - and I may as well publish this information on BritBase since there may be others who are interested in such arcana.

The source for this information is BCM, October 1904, p386, which shows the pairings used.

1904 BCF Pairing Table

As can easily be seen, this differs considerably from standard Berger pairings (Table 3) generally used today. (You can also view Berger pairings on the ECF website).

One oddity with the original 1904 BCF pairings is that the player who draws the number 12 has a rather strange colour sequence - bwwbbwwbbwb - whereas the other eleven players alternate colours as far as possible. As far as I can tell, these pairings were used from 1904 up to and including 1947 . If anyone has more definitive information about their use, I would be glad to hear it and share it here.

Table 1a: All-Play-All Pairings Used for 12-player BCF Tournaments (1904-1947)

Here are the 1904-1947 BCF pairings set out again, having switched the table axes round the other way (as I find this easier, for some reason):

Table 1a 1 2 3 4 5 6
Rd 1 1 v 2 11 v 3 10 v 4 9 v 5 8 v 6 7 v 12
Rd 2 3 v 1 7 v 8 6 v 9 5 v 10 4 v 11 12 v 2

Rd 11 1 v 12 2 v 11 3 v 10 4 v 9 5 v 8 6 v 7

The reason I have gone to the trouble of doing all this is so that I can deduce the round number and date of games played in old British Championship events. This is not always possible but if you can find a handful of games from an event showing the correct colours, round number and/or date, it can be possible to reverse engineer the pairing numbers and thus work out the same data for other games which have incomplete data. This can be invaluable when trying to resurrect the full details of an old BCF-organised tournament.

For example, if you find two games played in a tournament by a particular player and it shows that the player had the white pieces in both of them and that they were played in rounds 1 and 2 of a particular tournament, then you already have enough data to deduce three of the draw numbers of players in the tournament and are well on the way to being able to recreate the complete pairings for the tournament. You can see from the table above that only the player with draw number 7 has white in both of rounds 1 and 2, so you know that player must have been draw number 7. You then know that his or her first opponent is 12 and second-round opponent is 8, and so forth. With a little bit more info about the games and you can probably reconstruct the complete pairings.

Table 1b: the pairings used above have some antiquity. By way of comparison here is Table 1b, using the above pairing regime for the 20-player 1890 Manchester International Masters tournament.

Table 2: All-Play-All Pairings Used for BCF Tournaments (1948 to date unknown)

The pairings documented above in Table 1a were used from 1904 to 1947. At the 1948 BCF Congress in London, the all-play-all pairings were changed to those set out in the Table 2a below. The 1965/66 BCF Yearbook documents these pairings on page 351 at the end of an article on how to run a chess tournament by W Ritson Morry. I have given the differences between these and the 1904-1947 (Table 1) pairing rules in red:

Table 2a 1 2 3 4 5 6
Rd 1 1 v 2 11 v 3 10 v 4 9 v 5 8 v 6 12 v 7
Rd 2 3 v 1 7 v 8 6 v 9 5 v 10 4 v 11 2 v 12

Rd 11 1 v 12 2 v 11 3 v 10 4 v 9 5 v 8 6 v 7

It seems likely that the changes were made to remove the strange colour sequence for draw number 12 that applied under the Table 1a pairings (bwwbbwwbbwb), which in Table 2a becomes a perfect alternation except for the last two rounds, thus wbwbwbwbwbb.

Here are the equivalent pairings for a 10-player tournament as listed in the 1965/66 BCF Yearbook. These pairings appeared to have been used for Hastings ten-player all-play-all sections starting in 1948/49, but by 1956/57 they were using standard Berger pairings as given below at table 3b.

Table 3: Berger Pairings

Berger pairings—the modern standard for all-play-all chess tournaments—are as shown in Table 3a (12 players) and Table 3b (10 players). They are the same as Table 2 except that the last round of Table 2 moves to become round 1 and all the other rounds are shifted down one round (e.g. round 2 of Table 2a becomes round 3 of Table 3a, etc). Colours are unchanged from the above model but the effect is to give perfect alternation for the last number in the draw. I'm not sure when the switch from Table 2 to Table 3 pairings was made.

Table 4: Hastings Christmas Congress, Pairings for Ten-Player All-Play-All Tournaments - 1932/33(?) until 1947/48

This appeared on the front cover of a programme for the 1932/33 Hastings Congress which someone was selling on eBay! Many thanks to Ulrich Tamm for drawing my attention to it. I have not checked to see if it was used earlier than 1932/33 - it may well have been.

Table 4a 1 2 3 4 5
Rd 1 1 v 2 9 v 3 8 v 4 7 v 5 10 v 6
Rd 2 3 v 1 4 v 9 5 v 8 6 v 7 10 v 2

Rd 8 9 v 1 8 v 2 7 v 3 6 v 4 5 v 10
Rd 9 1 v 10 2 v 9 3 v 8 4 v 7 5 v 6

Looks odd but it appears to be correct. It's similar to Table 1 in some ways, but no.10's colours seem to be wwbbwwbbb - finishing with three blacks. Admittedly the scan I've seen of this is a bit blurry but that's what it seems to say, and it checks out against the 1932/33 pairings - Sir George Thomas was no.10 in the pairings and finished with three Blacks. It also checks out against the 1947/48 Hastings Premier pairings where Spanjaard's colours were wwbbwwbbb, suggesting that he was draw no.10 that year.

However, for the 1948/49 Hastings, the more equitable pairing system shown above in Table 2b appears to have been used.

Later these Table 4a pairings were adjusted so that no.10's colours alternated perfectly, starting with White. The following pairings were used at Hastings 1952/53.

Table 4b 1 2 3 4 5
Rd 1 1 v 2 9 v 3 8 v 4 7 v 5 10 v 6
Rd 2 3 v 1 4 v 9 5 v 8 6 v 7 2 v 10
Rd 3 1 v 4 2 v 3 9 v 5 8 v 6 10 v 7
Rd 4 5 v 1 4 v 2 6 v 9 7 v 8 3 v 10
Rd 5 1 v 6 2 v 5 3 v 4 9 v 7 10 v 8
Rd 6 7 v 1 6 v 2 5 v 3 8 v 9 4 v 10
Rd 7 1 v 8 2 v 7 3 v 6 4 v 5 10 v 9
Rd 8 9 v 1 8 v 2 7 v 3 6 v 4 5 v 10
Rd 9 10 v 1 2 v 9 3 v 8 4 v 7 5 v 6

Changes from Table 4a shown in red. You can see that the one and only difference between Table 2b is that in Table 4b draw no.10 has White against No.1 in the final round whereas draw no.10 is Black against no.1 in round 9 of Table 2b.

Generate your own old-style BCF tournament PGN file...

Only die-hard chess historians will want to read on from this point... the other thing I sometimes want to do when seeking details of rounds and dates of an old BCF-organised all-play-all tournament is to generate a skeleton PGN file so as to be able to enter game moves or information about games. I may be the only person on the planet who wants to do this (!) but on the off-chance that someone else is interested (and for my own personal record), I have set out the following.

Firstly, you can't do anything until you know the original draw numbers. Once you have this information (which you can work out from newspaper or magazine reports), you can generate a PGN file showing correct round numbers using the data set out below. Note, the cut and paste data below has built into it the pairing rules as set out in Table 1, so it's only suitable for generating one of these 'old-school' (1904-47) 12-player all-play-all tournaments. If you want to use it to produce PGN data for a tournament based on Berger pairings then you would first have to edit the 'p01', 'p02' data to conform to Berger pairings. (If you want to generate a tournament based on modern Berger pairings and you own the ChessBase software then you'll be better off using the facility contained in that software for generating a PGN.)

To generate a skeleton PGN file for an old-style 12-player BCF tournament, you need to (1) copy the slab of data between the horizontal rules below; (2) paste into a text editor and then (3) globally edit using a text editor as shown below.

Items for global editing:

1) title-name - globally edit to something like BCF-ch 11th or GBR-chW 11th or BCF-ch First Class
2) town-name - name of the town where the tournament was held, e.g. Hastings
3) startdate - the start date for the tournament in the format YYYY.MM.DD
4) rounddate01 - the date of the first round in the format YYYY.MM.DD *
5) Repeat edit 4 (rounddate02, etc) for rounds 2-11. (A bit tedious, this, but I can't find a neater way of doing it.)
6) p01 - change to the name of the first player in the draw, using the format Surname, comma, forename(s)
7) Repeat edit 6 (p02, etc) for the other 11 players in the draw.

* Note that nearly all British Championship events, in the past as in the present (until 2017, when the number of rounds was reduced to nine), started on the Monday, had a rest day on the following Sunday, and ended on the second Friday. One exception was in 1973 when there was no play on the first Friday as the venue had been pre-booked for a darts match! That year rounds 1-4 were played Monday-Thursday, the rest day was on the Friday, and rounds 5-11 were played Saturday-Friday, including play on the Sunday.

Once you have completed the global edits, you should save the text to a text file with the suffix *.pgn - and you have a skeleton PGN file, with all the headers, and all that remains for you to do is to add the moves and results in your chess database software.
