2nd GM norm for Michael Adams.
n.b. the name of this tournament varies. CHESS Magazine (Jonathan Tisdall's report appears in the September 1989 CHESS, p23 and the crosstable is in the August 1989 CHESS, p3) calls it the "Park Hall International" and various newspapers name it after the venue (Park Hall Hotel & Leisure Centre), while BCM (August 1989, 343) refers to it as the "ECA/Granada Tournament, Preston". The venue was actually in a village called Charnock Richard, which is about two miles from the town of Chorley and about six miles from the city of Preston.
1 Brett Lund was a last-minute replacement for WGM Yelena Akhmilovskaya (USSR/USA, 2430) who withdrew minutes before the start, pleading nervous exhaustion.
"... the Russian defector, Yelena Akhmilovskaya, withdrew, minutes before the first round, from the Park Hall Grandmaster tournament in Preston. The 31-year-old Russian pleaded nervous exhaustion as the result of the trauma of gaining exit documents for herself and her seven-year-old daughter from Moscow the previous week." (Keene, The Times, 24 June 1989)
