THE CHALLENGERS’ TOURNAMENT by Peter C Griffiths

The arrangements for the Challengers’ were a little different this year; it was increased to a 64-player event at the expense of the Challengers’ Reserves, which was scrapped altogether. It had even more of an international flavour this time than in previous years, with 27 of the 64 competitors coming from abroad. These, together with a good selection of some of the best English players, provided a very interesting tournament with a first prize of £200 in addition to a place in next year’s Premier.

The eventual winner, undefeated with a score of 8/10, was the hitherto unknown 16-year old American player, Mark Diesen, whose style has a nice mixture of soundness and aggression, and who, one feels, is likely to develop into a very strong master before long.

No less than seven players tied for second place, and scooped up all the remaining prize money between them. Among these were the British players Bellin, Nunn, Pritchett and de Veauce. De Veauce was actually level with Diesen before the last round commenced, but was unable to maintain his challenge, losing to Pritchett, while Diesen beat the Dutch player Rol.

Of the other players, the American Formanek was not quite able to produce his best form, which last year gave him a share of first place with Rellstab, while the British players Cafferty and Mabbs both started off well and then faded towards the end.
