Results gleaned from daily reports in the Times and rankings table from CHESS, September 1963, Vol.28/441-2, p383. The CHESS and Times results differ in one respect: the Times has the result of the final round game Guillaume-Botterill as 1-0 and their points tally as 5 and 4 respectively whereas CHESS has their points tallies as shown above, both 4½, suggesting that the game ended in a draw. BCM, November 1963, p328, published a correction to the list of results given in the September issue (p271), confirming that Botterill did score 4½.

CHESS, September 1963, Vol.28/441-2, p382 (report by B H Wood)

Whitby’s congress has been built up since the departure of our Chess Festival to Eastbourne, by Dr. Akeroyd (not to mention his son Michael) to bigger heights than ever. The 140 or so entries, including Bank Holiday week-end events, compared well with the biggest Festival there. Moreover, the British Chess Federation, tired of seeking a new venue every year and suffering late delays and cancellations, may settle in Whitby for two or three years; next year’s B.C.F. congress will be at Whitby, not in any of the actual premises used hitherto but in a newly built school about five minutes’ walk from the Grammar School.

Everything went very smoothly this year, on a pattern curiously reminiscent of our Festivals, to which Dr. Akeroyd is generous in acknowledging his debt. Your editor [BH Wood] piled up such a lead in the first week, with a score of 5½ out of 6, that he was able to coast languidly into first place with one win and four draws the second. Not so very languidly against Basman who caught him in the opening and won a rook. [See Mike Basman's confession to cheating during this game at the Kingpin website] Harry Golombek started poorly, no doubt worried about his mother’s illness: as her health improved, so did his play. The full table of the Northern Open appears opposite: our sincere apologies go to P. J. Meade for omitting him from the list of prizewinners which we rushed, at the last minute into our last issue. F. N. Stephenson kindly draws our attention to the feat of Ronald Thomas who, in the first chess he has played for three years, went through undefeated and proceeded to take first place in the Major Open at Bath.

J L Seppings did well to tie with M J Haygarth in the top Bank Holiday tournament. Lady Normanby presented the prizes.

Premier and Major First Week: (1) Otto H Hardy (Loughborough) 4½; (2-4) Kenneth P Neat (Sunderland), Douglas Eric Arnold Riley (Luton), Roy Alan Wagstaff (London) 3½; (5-7) Charles P Fisher (Rugby), Brian A Heath (Newport), Nico F Vromans (Holland) 3; (8-11) (Thomas) Alec Blacker (York), Robert Love Lamming (Isle of Man), David A Smith (Leeds), G Wood (Coventry) 2½; (12) F Cole (Manchester) 2; (13) J M Ellis (Pickering) 1½; (14-15) Rev. Henry Middleton Blackett (Nottingham), R Suthers 1; (16) J M Corton (St. Leonards) - Roy Alan Wagstaff won the first prize for a Major entrant.

Major Fortnight: (1) S Crookes (Sheffield); (2-3) A van Maanen (Holland), Alan Edgar Nield (St. Leonards)

Major Second Week: (1-3) Jovan M Djukanovich (Leeds), Petras Monciunskas (Bradford)
