Past Work and Projects
Between 1999 and 2012 I was a full-time chess magazine editor, as well as working freelance from time to time as above. I was also editor of the English national chess federation's house magazine ChessMoves for a year.
BIOGRAPHY
I was born in Loudwater, near High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, in 1953, and educated at High Wycombe Royal Grammar School and Selwyn College, Cambridge, obtaining a degree in Law and Classics.
I was taught chess by my brother when aged about seven and started playing competitively at school aged 14. I have represented Wales at full international level and won a number of open chess tournaments.
In September 2010 I became editor of Britain's leading chess periodical CHESS Magazine after being editor of British Chess Magazine from 1999 to 2010. As well as writing and editing chess articles for magazines and websites, I have authored a number of chess books for beginners and elementary players. I have written articles for The Guardian newspaper and other periodicals on a freelance basis, made numerous radio and TV appearances as a chess pundit, and also helped publicise major chess events such as the London Chess Classic and the Gibraltar Chess Festival. I am also a chess photographer and my photos have appeared on many chess websites, in chess magazines and on the front covers of several UK national newspapers.
I live with my wife in Kingston-upon-Thames and also enjoy family history, playing the guitar and bird-watching.
